Halcyon Days
Adventure Unfolding...
Halcyon Days :: Miiki's Story A deep red colored air ship sails through the clear blue sky, its wing rockets gliding it steadily along over mile after mile of deep blue ocean. On each wing and on the nose of the ship, it is decorated with a winged refractor logo, the mark of a company called "Digliv", best known for their breakthroughs in advancing the quality of equipment used by spotters. The air ship is on the smaller side for a standard commercial ship, carrying within it a group of skilled field researchers and some of the company's most advanced prototype equipment. Disrupting the otherwise professional feel of the ship is a young girl of 15, dressed in a black t-shirt and jeans.

"This sucks," she mumbles to herself in the corner of the ship's communications room, "they could have at least given me a window seat."

Miiki is her name. Having run away from an orphanage at age 13, she has had a rough time of things the past two years. Drifting from island to island by any means possible, she has been a stowaway on seafaring ships, hitch-hiked on air ships big and small, living a life that earns her enough Zenny to keep alive and little else. She was quite shocked when she was given the opportunity to enter into this research group, and accepted the offer gratefully. However, in the two months working with them, her young age and low social status has earned her the responsibility of doing all of the team's grunt work. As hard as she tries, no one will pay attention when she tries to show how useful she can actually be and so she has grown bitter toward them all.

"Miiki!" One of her co-workers shouts, shaking her from a daydream.
"Huh? What's up?" Miiki responds.
"We're nearing our destination," the snotty woman says, "are you gonna go get things ready or sit there looking clueless?"
"Yeah, sure," Miiki replies disinterestedly, suppressing the all too familiar urge to slap the woman across the face.

Miiki hated her more than anyone in the crew. If she were to mess up, the woman would always yell at or humiliate her, and when she did something right, the woman would always find some way of telling Miiki to do it better next time. Still, Miiki had grown used to brushing off such rudeness all her life. This was the first chance she'd ever had to actually make something of herself, and she didn't want to blow it. Regardless, the word "payback" did run through her head fairly often, and it was very tempting at times. On a ship such as this with delicate equipment on board, it would be so easy to tamper with, or when told to prepare the diggers' equipment as she was doing now, she could easily dump it out the window and spoil the entire mission. Sweet revenge, she often thought to herself, but the consequences of such actions always outweighed the temporary victory she might gain.

Miiki quickly goes about the task of laying out the equipment that will be taken into the ruins by the diggers, double-checking to make sure the communications devices are transmitting properly. Once her work is done she heads back to the communications room, but stops along the way.
"Oh my, that looks nasty," Miiki overhears someone in a side room say as their air ship pulls to a stop at its destination.
